Larry’s Orbit

Walter Lawrence ‘Larry’ Asmus passed away November 9, at the age of 61 at his Home in Tabernash, CO. A Colorado native, he was literally a legacy at Winter Park Resort, the place he chose to work for 36 years.  He was known throughout the resort as 8-2, which was his radio code as the Race Crew Supervisor and leader of the 8-10’s.  He was also known as “Larry the Great”, a nickname he famously gave himself but stuck amongst those who knew him.

Larry was well known amongst the inner workings of US Ski and Snowboard, specifically the Rocky Mountain Division, serving as a certified Rocky Mountain Skiing Race Official since 1994. Larry officiated races on all scales from entry level to Professional level Alpine races and supported the production and successful execution of various top level Freestyle competitions. Larry mentored his team with care and detail to allow them the ability to continue his legacy.

Though he had a wealth of knowledge and experience with winter sport, Larry really loved the bike races. He was well respected amongst both the Cross Country and Downhill bike communities.

Everyone will miss his skill, humor, kindness, fun personality, and generous spirit.

Larry was married to Brooke Bretz and leaves behind so many in his large extended Colorado family including his mother, Nancy Asmus, three sisters Kathleen Asmus Stump, Paula Asmus Garcia, and Shelley Asmus Hershner.

A Celebration of Life will take place Friday, November 17th at 4:30, inside West Portal Station at the base of Winter Park in Larry’s honor.
